1. Get a Domain Name
What is a domain name? It’s your address. For example, my domain name is: dev.lecremedelacrumb.com This part is a lot of fun – It’s almost as good as naming your own child! (I wouldn’t actually know, I don’t have children…) You get to pick a name for our corner of the blogosphere. What’s it gonna be?? suzieqfashionblog.com ? karlainthekitchen.com ? lifeinbunnyslippers.com ? Brainstorm some ideas, pick the top few that sound best to you, and then head over to GoDaddy.com to purchase your very own domain name! Click on the link below to get started….
You’ll see a screen that looks like this:
Type your address into the space that says ENTER A DOMAIN NAME. Click on the green “Search Domain” button. If your blog name has already been bought by someone else (sad day…) then you’ll type in your second choice to see if it’s available. When you find one that you love and no one else has bought it, you’ll see a screen like this:
Yay! Click on the green “CONTINUE TO CART” button. (I recommend ignoring that little box with the note “Let U.S. shoppers know that you are local. Add this: <— this is not really needed, so don’t check it.)
Next you’ll come to a screen with three steps.
Step 1 will look like this:
This is up to you, I like to have the privacy feature installed for my own blog. If you want to learn more about that feature, just click on the little question mark at the bottom of the gray box, it’ll explain more for you. Next, scroll down to Step 2:
Don’t click anything on the left half, you don’t need that for what we’re doing. But you will need a hosting plan. Without a hosting plan your blog domain will end up looking like www.myfunlittleblog.wordpress.com instead of www.myfunlittleblog.com. You select your hosting plan on the right half of that box where it says HOSTING (makes sense, right?). I recommend selecting ECONOMY from the drop down box. It’s the most affordable and will set up you up with everything you’re going to need until you blog is really really big.
Then scroll down to Step 3:
This part is up to you. If you want to pay for an email address that says something like firstname.lastname@example.org you can select this option. If you just want to set up a free Gmail account or other mail account for your blog, you don’t need to worry about selecting this option. Now click on CONTINUE TO CART! In the next screen you’ll select PROCEED TO CHECKOUT, then complete the checkout process.
2. Download WordPress
WordPress is the program you use to build, write, and maintain your blog – I use it and love it! It’s so easy to use with lots of options to customize your blog. To get started, log in to your GoDaddy Account Manager (this is your account on GoDaddy.com). Once you’re logged in and are viewing your account, scroll down just a hair and you’ll see this:
Click on the little plus sign (+) on the WEB HOSTING tab. A little dropdown box will appear which will show your hosting plan. On the far right end of that box, click on LAUNCH. Next, you’ll be brought to a screen where you’ll see this:
Click on WORDPRESS (top left). The next screen will look like this:
Click INSTALL NOW! Follow the prompts. You should receive an email confirming the installation.
3. Make Your Blog Pretty!
Go to your WordPress login page (example: www.myfunlittleblog.com/wp-login) and log in to your WordPress account.
Yay! You’re officially inside of your blog. Right now it’s pretty spacious, empty, and quite boring. don’t worry though – we’re going to make it look lovely in a minute. Once you’re logged in, you’ll see that all of your menus and options are over on the left hand side of your screen. Some of those buttons are self explanatory, you’ll click on POST to write a new post, PAGES to add new pages, etc. For now, click on APPEARANCE —> THEMES.
Here you’ll be able to go through and choose the theme you like best. Once you’ve chosen your theme you can customize it to your liking. WordPress has tons of fun free themes to choose from.
And that’s it! You’re officially a blogger – congrats and welcome to the blogosphere!! 🙂
And you should definitely check out my friend Chelsea’s brand new book – it’s amazing!
