This is so many of my favorite things, coming together in one super easy and SUPER delicious summer meal.

You know that I’m a fan of salmon – BIG fan – and asparagus just might be my favorite summertime vegetable. Bring those together in a simple and easy to prepare foil pack dinner and I’m in heaven!

The herb butter is so simple. The key is just to let the butter come to room temperature ahead of time so that it is easy to mash with the garlic and seasonings with a fork. Drop a few dollops of that savory herb butter on top of the salmon and asparagus, wrap it all tightly in a neat little tin foil package, and cook it on the grill or in the oven.

These are tasty year round, but especially fun for Summer when you’re grilling out in the backyard, or camping. Prepare them ahead of time for an even quicker dinner! Oh and cleanup is a breeze! Eat straight from the foil and then toss when you’re done.

It’s like magic.

Easy, healthy, garlic herb butter salmon and asparagus foil packs are a quick and tasty 30 minute meal for summer nights, camping, and cookouts. The flaky salmon and tender asparagus will melt in your mouth!
Recipe type: Main Dish
Cuisine: American
Serves: 4
  • 4 boneless skinelss salmon fillets
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 pound asparagus, ends trimmed
  • 1 lemon, thinly sliced, (plus additional wedges for garnish)
  • ½ cup butter, at room temperature
  • 3 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 3 teaspoons minced garlic
  • fresh thyme or parsley, for garnish
  1. Season salmon generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Arrange one salmon fillet and ¼ of the asparagus in the center of one 12x12 inch piece of foil. Repeat with remaining salmon and asparagus on 3 other pieces of foil. Slide lemon slices under the salmon and asparagus.
  2. In a small bowl mix butter, Italian seasoning, and garlic. Drop large dollops of the herb butter on top of the salmon and asparagus.
  3. Fold the foil tightly around the salmon and asparagus, being sure to seal the ends together tightly so the juices and butter doesn't run out while cooking. Grill over medium high heat for 6-8 minutes on each side, OR bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes, until asparagus is tender and salmon is flaky.
  4. Drizzle fresh lemon juice over the top and serve immediately.

This looks delicious and so easy to make. Thank you, I will prepare this dish for my elderly mother who loves salmon and asparagus (her favorite meal)

Can you use parchment paper because aluminum foil is bad for you!

Yes, you can use parchment paper if you would prefer! πŸ™‚

Just what I was thinking. Wrap it in the paper and then in foil so it does not burn. Might need a few extra minutes to cook.

Can i use foil pam and bake it?

        Yes, you can. πŸ™‚

Good idea. The lemon is acid which reacts with the aluminum foil. Tomatoes are the same thing. If there is no acid, the aluminum will not leach into the food.

Be advised that if you use parchment paper inside the foil, you need to cook way longer than a few extra minutes. I had mine in the oven for a little over 20 minutes and everything was still cold… the salmon, the asparagus, even the lemon slices! I’m not a innovative cook, so I was totally at a loss as to what to do… husband in late, needed to eat… dinner was a disaster.

Yes! I have used a similar recipe every time using parchment paper instead of tin foil. it works great! you can also put some pesto sauce on top of the salmon to add more flavor!

Can’t wait to try this!
Do you think I could prep these and stick them in the freezer?

I haven’t tried this myself yet, but I think it would work! πŸ™‚

Always on the look out for those easy weeknight dinners for when my enthusiasm to get in the kitchen is no where to be found. Saving this for one of those times. Salmon and asparagus AND herb butter – YES!

What size salmon filets?

Anywhere in the 4-8 ounce range works great! πŸ™‚

“Fold asparagus tightly around salmon and asparagus”. Typo. Just letting you know. Can’t wait to try this recipe, it looks great!!

Look yummy! Typo though? “Fold asparagus tightly around the salmon and asparagus”

Can’t wait to fix for family

Can you use other fish? MahiMahi?

Yes you can! I would probably grill or cook it a little longer than the original recipe says.

Yes it need more time for mer too!!

What temperature u set at in oven

Would it work with Tuna?

Yes! Just grill the foil packs for about 10 minutes per side.

On step 3, did you mean to type “Fold FOIL around salmon and asparagus…”? 😏
Can’t wait to try the recipe!

Looks great. I love dinners that you put in foil packs and throw on the grill. One little thing…check your recipe. Step three should read…Fold foil tightly around salmon and asparagus. Will be trying this weekend.

Thank you! That typo has been corrected. πŸ™‚ Hope you enjoy this recipe!

No typo not fixed but I knew you meant foil before I read all the reviews. Will Try this one for sure.

Hi Julie. I fixed the typo a few days ago. I guess it took a while to update.

It’s amazing how quickly people just have to point out ” typo”s. Pretty obvious as To what you meant. Can’t wait to try this..thanks for posting

What are the nutritional amounts – protein, carbs, and fat? How many ounces of salmon per packet?

Look on the packaging of the food you are using and it will tell you.

Sounds great, thanks.

Could you do this recipe with Tuna steaks – and would they take the same amount of time to cook in the oven please?

Yes, you could do this with tuna! I would cook them for about 10 minutes per side. πŸ™‚

Been making something similar to this for 20 years – only using olive oil instead of butter. Love the idea of the asparagus! Will definitely try this tomorrow night.

Do you know how long to cook them in the oven for if I use broccoli instead?

You should be fine to cook this for the same amount of time when using broccoli instead of asparagus. πŸ™‚

I made this tonight. My wife LOVED IT!!! Not only was it easy to prepare but OMG, it was sooooo good. Thanks,

So glad you enjoyed this recipe, Carlton!

I think you meant “Fold the FOIL tightly around the asparagus and salmon.”

Yes, that it what I meant! I just corrected it! Thanks for pointing that out :).

What type salmon fillets are best to use?

Hi Gwen! Any type of salmon fillets are fine. I prefer wild salmon. πŸ™‚

It is a wonderful meal. However,no one should be cooking directly with aluminum…..It absorbs into the food
I wrap in parchment paper, then aluminum foil.
Aluminum has been shown to collect in the body, including the brain, especially children.

thank you, great idea using parchment paper!

I’ve used a corning ware ,and, I have done this recipe in a non stick pan and lid too

“Fold asparagus tightly around the salmon and asparagus, being sure to seal the ends together” make no sense

but I do want you to know this sound delicious and I am making it for dinner tonight except I am using steel-head and I added some fingerling potatoes πŸ™‚

I was wondering if chicken could be used as a substitute? I love salmon but my boyfriend is not fan 😞

Yes, chicken could be substituted. Just be sure to cut the chicken into no larger than 1 inch chunks and cook for an extra 10-15 minutes.

Typo “Fold asparagus tightly around the salmon and asparagus” But it sounds great and we are going to try this.

Could you package all that up then throw it in the freezer for later cooking?

    Yes you could!

That is an awful lot of butter. I will half and hope it will still be tasty.

It amounts to 1 tablespoon of butter per packet (part on salmon and part on veggie….doesn’t sound like too much for flavor and moisture. It might be too blain with less!

I made this today it was so good look forward to more of your recipes!

Has anyone tried this with salmon with the skin on? When salmon is cooked on foil, the skin comes off very easily because it sticks to the foil.

Making this tonight for dinner. Fingers crossed hubs and mother in-law like it!

I’m trying to watch my weight but would love to try this recipe. My only concern with the recipe is the butter. How would you suggest substituting the butter? Could I use olive oil instead!

Can you recommend any other fish I can substitute the salmon with? Sometimes I don’t care for salmon.

Because my wife and I both work (me in the military which really complicates dinners) easy but healthy and delicious recipes are always a must. This was a great one. Thanks.

I will never understand why people rate recipes they don’t try first. Please stop.

I’m just in the middle eating this and I already know I won’t be making it again.

There is too much butter and the italian seasoning over powers the delicate flavor of the salmon. It does nothing to enhance my favorite fish and I was left wishing I had stuck to my regular dill, chives, and white wine.

The texture of the fish was nice, but it always is when you cook it in a packet, and the seasoning went well with the asparagus.

I followed the directions and didn’t add any other ingredients. Unless you are a huge fan of italian seasoning I would look at some other recipes.

How do you grill on each side when in the foil packet? Sounds like all would spill out when you turn packet on a grill.

Would tilapia work with this? Would cooking time need to change?

Tilapia will work fine and you shouldn’t need to adjust the cooking times unless it’s a very large piece of fish in which case it may need a bit longer. πŸ™‚

Delicious! I’ve made it twice! I throw sliced potatoes in separate pouch and throw the same butter spread on potatoes. I separate the salmon and asparagus into separate Pouches and when I’m lazy I throw I oven. I put the asparagus and sliced potatoes I. 10 min prior to salmon. The delicateness & thickness of the filet dictates the time I cook it. But it’s a fool proof easy meal – a little prep for a great reward!!!

Was delish. Store had baby asparagus so extra yummy. And I made 2 with boneless skinless chicken thighs and 2 with salmon as the recipe called for. We have 2 non fish eaters in the family. All fit in my countertop pressure oven. Didn’t heat up the kitchen. Served it with a slice of crunchy sourdough bread no butter

This recipe was great… I really enjoyed cooking and eating this meal. I used 2 tsp of butter and season all with the minced garlic. Love it….

Definitely looks tasty. I need to try this. Thanks for sharing.

Sounds so yummy!!! I want to make this but what other veggie can you substitute for the Asparagus? Hubby doesn’t like Asparagus and I’m allergic to Broccoli?

Cauliflower or green beans? I would boil either of those for a few minutes first so that they will cook quickly with the salmon. πŸ™‚

I made this tonight. It was really delicious! Question, though…Is there a step missing in the cooking instructions? If not, how did you achieve the browning as shown in the pic?

Hi Helen, No steps are missing but cooking these on the grill helps to get that browning on the salmon. If you really love a good browned surface on your salmon, I’d recommend searing it first on the stove or if baking, you can simply open up the packet for the last 3-4 minutes and switch your oven to broil. πŸ™‚

      Thanks, Tiffany!

Fresh or Frozen Salmon?

The Salmon looked nothing like the photos which was a disappointment but it was edible.

I just made this recipe tonight for my son’s 49th birthday! We all loved them and they were so easy to make….as long as you have everything (including the herbed butter) ready ahead of time. I did them in the oven but I will try them on the grill next time to maybe get a little more color (browning). Thanks for the recipe! We’ll try it with chicken, shrimp, and other seafood in the future. Love the easy clean up!!!

What is a really good brand of Italian seasoning to use ?

Wow the internet police are so excited to point out a typo huh!! I think she got it the first time someone made the comment people…Thank you very much Tiffany for the recipe, I understood it fully and am looking forward to making it for dinner tonight πŸ™‚

Has anyone tried this with haddock?

What is the temperature?

Instructions say to grill 6-8 per side. If they are in a foil packet with butter, etc., would this not leak out if they were flipped over? I would normally not expect something in a foil packet would have to be flipped over.

hi I want to try to make but using parchment paper then wrap with foil… will I have to adjust temp? and how much longer do you think ill need to add to cooking time?

How can you store the leftovers?
It’s only my husband and I tonight.

I made this tonight and it was delicious and easy to prepare

Just wanted to know about the”skin” Do you remove it before or after,?

If you have skin-on salmon, remove before proceeding with the recipe.

Baking in aluminum foil is not wise or healthy as it leaches into the food, especially spicy or acidic types of foods. I use your recipes with a Pyrex baking dish or other safer pots.

What do you cover the pyrex with? Is foil ok as long As its not touching the food??

how much parsley/thyme?

I’ve got to admit, this has become a go-to recipe for a quick and easy meal when we need one!

It is delicious, hot, and if you do it right, it has a nice ratio of veggies to fish and is VERY filling.

I think I’ve made it 5-6 times now and each time I enjoy it! We even substituted Lime for Lemon last time because our Lemon had mysteriously gone missing (my wife was sick and was putting it in her water), and it was still fine!

Thanks for sharing, I appreciate the recipe and look forward to enjoying it many more times.

Full disclosure- I am about to stuff my packets and toss them in the oven!

I am so SO happy to hear that! Thanks for your great feedback, I love the idea of trying lime!

OMG how annoying to have so many people correct a type-o that common sense could easily figure out what you meant.

Made this dish for my hubby about a month ago-he said it was a restaurant quality meal!

What an easy way to make dinner. I used a garlic pepper, sea salt blend and put a little directly on the salmon as well as on top of the asparagus. I would definitely make this again.

I cant wait to try this recipe

Must try…The soup & the fish love great…

Can’t wait to try these recipes!
I especially want to try the Salmon recipe.

Has ANYone tried to do this In a rice cooker instead of in the OVEN or on a grill?

Can you clarify on the baking temp?

Hi Kai – the baking temp should be 400 degrees for 20 minutes until the asparagus is tender and the salmon is flaky.

WOW!! Why do some ppl make Tiffany say everything twice?? the recipe clearly states to cook at 400Β° for 20 mins until the asparagus is cooked & the salmon is flakey. is it too difficult to go back & read the recipe??

Do you have nutritional data for this meal?

Hi Sarah – My Fitness Pal has a great tool that will provide nutritional information for any recipe on the internet through their app.

I just cooked it, and OMg it is delicious. My husband is not a fan of salmon and he loved it…. thank you for the recipe!!!!

By Italian seasoning, do you mean seasonings like oregano, thyme, etc.?Or or are you talking about the Italian salad dressing seasonings? So sorry this Is in all capital letters, I can’t get it to type any other way. ☺️

Hi Tracy – Italian Seasoning is a specific spice you can purchase at the grocery store. If you can’t find it in your area, there are recipes on the internet that show you how to make it using oregano, marjoram, thyme, basil, rosemary, and sage.

Looks so good.We have to eat healthy.

I have to have something easy to cook.I am 75 and I can’t staand at the stove to long.
Those wraps packs look good and easy.

Can you use canned salmon for this like you would fresh or thawed frozen salmon?

Hi Natalie – I wouldn’t recommend using canned salmon but you could substitute a a cheaper cut of fish such as tilapia.

Your dishes are making cooking so easy! Thank you!!!!!!! I was always hesitant to cook but all the steps are easy and ingrediants easy to find too.

Thanks for this – I have made foil packets with chicken, beef other fish never did salmon camping – so easy to do when camping – 1 dish meals are great. This sounds really tasty – can’t wait to try.

Thank you so much for these amazing and easy to cook meals. You MAKE cooking fun and joyful. I’m so blessed to be able to cook these awesome meals. Plus my fiance have been enjoyed it too.

Looks wonderful thank you will try this soon

How long should we cook this if we use parchment paper instead or inside of the foil? I am new to cooking fish. Just want to make sure it doesn’t come out under cooked.

The cooking time should be approximately the same as the parchment paper shouldn’t interfere with the cooking process. πŸ™‚

Sounds delicios. Imay have To fix this before summer

was planning on Sauteed salmon and grilled asparagus with hollandsise sauce tonight but niw i will Try this recipe… looks delicioUs and simple! Thanks!

Both sound great- but you’ll be grateful you chose this one! πŸ˜‰

The SALMON and asparagus foil bake is easily THE simplest, tastiest and most impressive meal! THANk you, thank you, THANK you! It got repeated COMPLIMENTS FROM hubby and children (which says so much).

Nothing like pleasing the husband AND kids with the same meal! Glad that you all enjoyed this!

Nutritional info?

Hi Lisa, My Fitness Pal has a great tool where you can import any recipe URL and it will pull up the nutritional info!

      Oh thanks!

So tasty! I made these foil packs with broccoli instead of asparagus because the store was out. TurNed out so well! Thanks for the recipE!

I just so want to do these

I like salmon and Asparagus and I will be making this.

I would love to hear what you think of it!! Hope that you love it!

It just makes me want to get a camp fire going and sit outside with some nice wine. Again another great recipe for my asparagus.

I can’t wait for camp fire season to be here!

Everything looks so delish

If you bake the foil pack, what temp setting for the oven?

Hi Judy – the baking temp should be 400 degrees for 20 minutes until the asparagus is tender and the salmon is flaky. I hope that you love it!

Can you use chicken breasts for this recipe?

Yes, you could switch the salmon out for chicken. I do have another foil pack on here that is a lemon chicken and asparagus recipe if you are interested in that instead!! Simply search “chicken and asparagus foil packs” and it will come right up!

can you use lemon pepper instead of italian seasoning?

It will alter the flavor significantly- but if lemon pepper is more of your preference, I suppose that you could give it a try. The italian season is a key player in the flavor of this dish! Definitely let me know how it turns out for you!

PERFECT! we love fish! I will add this to my fish recipes list

I hope you love it!! πŸ™‚

Excellent work you done here. I really like & enjoy your article.
