Easy, cheesy, Creamy Sausage Pasta with savory mushrooms, tender penne noodles, and spicy Italian sausage, all in a light yet rich creamy garlic and parmesan sauce.
Want all the pasta recipes? Of course you do! Try them all, but these are my favorites: One Pot Chicken Parmesan Pasta, Swedish Meatball Pasta, and Pesto Chicken Pasta Salad.

Is there anything better than a bowl of steamy, cheesy, meaty pasta put in front of your face on a cold winter night? Or any night, really? This one hits all the right notes: tender pasta, spicy sausage, earthy mushrooms, salty parmesan, and a creamy, garlicky sauce all in one dish. Plenty of sausage pasta for you, less dishes to clean up.
I know sometimes pasta gets a bad rap, but it’s honestly no worse for you than eating two pieces of bread on a sandwich, so long as your bowl (and that sandwich) aren’t gigantically oversized. Everything in moderation, right?
How Long do you Cook Ground Sausage?
Ground sausage only takes about 6-8 minutes over medium-high heat to cook through. If you’ve purchased sausage in the casings, you can easily cut the meat out of the casing before cooking and it will crumble up nicely.
You’ll want to either take the sausage out of the pan with a slotted spoon if you are going to use the grease in a skillet for cooking something else, or you should drain the sausage and dump the excess fat in the skillet if you need to start clean.
At What Temperature Should You Cook Italian Sausage?
If you are cooking sausage links, you should place raw, thawed links onto a greased baking sheet or lined with parchment or another oven-safe liner. Place them about an inch apart and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 15-18 minutes, flipping over once at the halfway mark. If you’re not sure if they are done cooking, use a meat thermometer to check for doneness. It should read 160 degrees for fully cooked sausage. That’s the perfect way to cook Italian sausage for this pasta sausage white sauce recipe.

Expert Tips and Tricks
Here are a few ways to take regular old pasta with sausage to the next level.
- Make it a one-pot dish by adding in more vegetables. Good ones to add in include spinach, kale (add toward the end) or smaller cuts of broccoli, bell peppers, or zucchini (saute with the mushrooms).
- Make it spicy by adding red pepper flakes, diced jalapenos or poblanos, or even spicier sausage, if you can find it.
- Try using a veggie pasta or gluten-free pasta in this dish if you have special diet needs. It would be just as delicious with some spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles as well!
- Add bacon crumbles and goat cheese to up the savory ante!
- Swap out the sausage for another ground meat and add in 1 teaspoon dried Italian herb blend or 1/4 teaspoon each dried basil, thyme, oregano, and parsley or rosemary to the meat when you are browning it.

What can i do if my sauce comes out on the thin side?
You could try and use a corn starch slurry!

Had this for supper a week ago; WOW!! What a great meal. Out of 5 I say an 8!
MMMMM good.
My wife wants me to keep cooking.
Delicious. The ratio of pasta to sausage was perfect. I added broccoli that i’d roasted in the oven but might steam it next time. Great recipe.
The addition of roasted broccoli sounds delicious!! I might have to try that next time I make this. 🙂

Hi! Just made this and both my husband and I LOVE it! So simple and quick for a week night meal. Only one quick question… how do you get the sauce not to be so watery? We followed the directions to a ‘T’ – thanks!
The sauce will thicken as it simmers, it’s likely that it didn’t simmer long enough or the heat should have been a bit higher, it should still be bubbling while it’s simmering and reducing.
This dish came out great! My husband and mom both agreed on it, so I’m calling it a win!
That’s fantastic!! Happy to hear your had such a good outcome with this recipe!
This dish is right up our alley! I WILL use Turkey Sausage and of course mushrooms, since we love them! Whole Grain Penne or Ziti, as well. Thanks for a quick & easy dinner recipe 🙂
You are welcome! 🙂
Hi, How much cream do you add? I am excited to make this 🙂
Sorry about that typo! Should be 1 cup.
what’s the measurement on the cream? Thanks and I’ve cooked many of your recipes and my family loves them.
Sorry about that error- it should be 1 cup!
I’m assuming that the pasta goes in when the sausage goes in the sauce?
Yes- sorry about that!! It’s fixed now.
The recipes ingredients note ” cup of heavy cream”. How much is it supposed to be? 1/2, 1, 2 …?
Sorry for that typo- should be 1 cup!
How much cream should be used? It just says Cup in the ingredient list!
Thanks for pointing that out! Should be 1 cup.
This recipe sounds very tasty but there is big margin for error because pasta should be measured in ounces, not cups! A single serving of pasta measured prior to cooking is generally 2 ounces of dry pasta. Your recipe states it serves 4, so total pasta should be listed as 8 ounces. depending on the size/shape of the pasta the weight of 4 cups could vary greatly. people tend to substitute the type of pasta listed in a recipe for the type they have on hand.
Thanks for your input 🙂
