Easy, crispy oven baked sweet potato fries you can whip up at home without a deep fryer!
Potato Wedges, Baked Sweet Potato Fries, and Garlic Parmesan Oven Fries are more fries to enjoy next!

Have you had sweet potato fries? If you haven’t you are in for a real treat here. They are sweet and salty at the same time and crazy good.

The great thing is that I feel like they pair well as a side to more dishes than just regular fries would. They aren’t just a burger side. (Although that is certainly an amazing thing to have them with.) They can go with tacos, hawaiian rice bowls, sandwiches and wraps, salads, grilled chicken. . . Basically anything.

Of course, growing up french fries were one of my favorite sides in the whole world and I would eat them with anything. Literally. Including burritos and salmon. And on the rare occasion that my family went out for breakfast, guess what I ordered.
Fries.

Those of you who have never been to Utah may not know what Fry Sauce is. Well it’s just amazing. And pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Sauce for fries.
Problem is, the only restaurants that serve it are the ones in Utah because it hasn’t quite caught on for the rest of the country. Which is really really sad. Although I did see it used by a big chef in a Food Network magazine a while back and they even referenced its Utah origin. So maybe it’s up-and-coming.

Basically the base is mayo and ketchup. But that is just the beginning. In my kitchen, I make a slew of varieties when it comes to fry sauce. Just a heads up because I’m sure I’ll be bringing them to you in the future. Pretty much every time I make fries I’ll be posting a new fry sauce recipe.
This one is pretty traditional but has more flavor than just the mayo-ketchup blend. It’s delicious. You will be double, and triple, and quadruple dipping those fries.
If you’re sharing with double-dip haters you may want to spoon some onto your plate.
Better yet, make a separate batch for yourself. Then you don’t have to worry about running out anyway.

What people are saying about these Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries
“Made these for the first time the other night… Amazing! Seriously, by far the best homemade fries we have ever had. I used plain Greek yogurt instead of the mayo in the fry sauce to try and cut down on calories and it was still absolutely delish! Thanks for sharing, so happy to add this to our regular dinner rotation.” – Lauren
“I just made these and they are delicious (as I sit here typing and eating now). Unfortunately, I did not have all the ingredients for the dip so I just used sriracha and mayo, which is delicious as well! Also, because I’m having a little bit of sweet tooth, I sprinkled brown sugar over the fries after they were done. Sooooo delicious. Serves 2-4? Nope, today I’ll just be serving 1 ” – Taylor
“Made these twice. They are perfect with or without sauce! I only used sugar, salt, pepper and garlic salt to toss with oil. Very filling and a nice change from regular fries. A keeper!!” – Amy

- ⅛ teaspoon garlic powder, and pepper
- ½ teaspoon sugar
Sauce
- ¼ cup mayo
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- ½ teaspoon lime juice
- ⅛ teaspoon onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper, celery salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Wash and dry the sweet potatoes and cut off the ends. Chop the potatoes in half lengthwise. Cut into 1/4 inch strips (you may cut larger pieces, but the cook time will increase.)
- Place cut potatoes in a large bowl and toss with just enough olive oil to coat completely.
- In a small bowl, mix all seasonings together. Sprinkle on potatoes and toss well to coat. Spread potatoes out on a single layer baking sheet, spreading out evenly. Bake for 10 minutes, remove from oven and turn potatoes over. Bake 10 additional minutes.*
- While fries are baking, mix together ingredients for the sauce. When fries are done, remove from oven, sprinkle with coarse sea salt and serve warm.
I live in Washington State and we have had the same fry sauce you describe (ketchup & mayo based) as far back as I can remember (1970). All of the fast food business’s in my state and a lot of the restaurants routinely serve it. I assumed it was nation wide….
Oh it’s definitely not nationwide, I’ve gotten some VERY weird looks when trying to order fry sauce in states in the middle east and on the east coast…. they always say ” you mean ketchup?” haha.
I just buy or make at home Thousand Island dressing which this virtually is. I like the addition of lime juice too. Or, the new chipotle dressings out now. Love these fries. : )
There’s a restaurant in NYC called Pom Frite. They ONLY serve fries, but they have a selection of at least 50 different dipping sauces. My favorites are wasabi mayo and chipotle mayo. Check it out if you’re ever in town.
Oh my gosh I want to cry… a whole restaurant devoted to fries and dipping sauces?!? I seriously can’t think of anything I would love more!!!
I love Sweet Potato fries. I am going to try your recipe. I’ll let you know how I well (or not) I do.
I tried these last night, very very good. Thank you for sharing.
I just made these and they are delicious (as I sit here typing and eating now). Unfortunately, I did not have all the ingredients for the dip so I just used sriracha and mayo, which is delicious as well! Fry sauce has been talked about by a Oklahoma woman pioneer woman on food network also its a staple here in iowa and in Nebraska and nd when I’ve been in colorado.
these are so delicious!!! thanks for posting these!
Aren’t they great?! And no deep frying needed!
Wait, where’s the fry sauce recipe? I’ve never heard of that before.
Hi Tia, the fry sauce recipe is the mayo-ketchup mixture at the bottom of the recipe. Mix together equal parts mayo and ketchup and then if you want to add a little pizazz I like to throw in some worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder – it’s so good!
I always find it interesting when people talk about fry sauce and say that it is a “Utah thing” and it hasn’t caught on elsewhere. I’ve eaten fry sauce since I was little (and I live in Oregon.) Restaurants serve it and you can buy bottles of it in the store (some far superior to others). Arctic Circle serves it (then again, most of their locations are in Utah) but so do several other bigger chain restaurants.
Ha, I should take a trip to Oregon I guess because every time I go out of town I ask for fry sauce and NO ONE knows what I’m talking about! I’ve asked for it in Illinois, Texas, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and California! I always get the same response, “Um, like ketchup? We have ketchup…”. 🙂
In Argentina, that sauce is called “Salsa Golf” and it’s greatly popular! Take a look:
By the way, I love your blog! You’re a great inspiration.
