Here’s How You Make It

ingredients and steps of preparation for olive garden salad

I pinky swear I didn’t skip any steps — this copycat salad is that easy!

  1. First, get out a large bowl and toss together the greens, tomatoes, onions, olives, and shredded carrots. (photos 1-3)
  2. Next, top the veggies with parmesan, croutons, and pepperoncinis. (not pictured)
  3. Then, make the dressing by combining all the ingredients in a jar, adding the lid, and shaking or whisking thoroughly in a bowl. (photo 4)
  4. Toss the salad with the dressing right before serving. (see below)
  5. Eat it like there’s no tomorrow!

Why This Recipe Works

Easy ingredients –All of the ingredients you need for this copycat Olive Garden salad are probably in your pantry or fridge, and if not, a quick run to the grocery store is all you need to pick up the components of this fabulous salad.

Parmesan –You wouldn’t think something as simple as shaved parmesan cheese would make such a difference, but the cheese in this salad is key here. Don’t skip it.

The dressing — The secret is that packet of Zesty Italian dressing mix, I’m telling you. Tangy, herby, and so tasty!

A combination of textures and flavors — You have the crunch of lettuce and carrots, the bite of onions, the even harder texture of croutons, and then the crumbly, nutty parmesan, and soft, salty olives. Top it with a bite of pepperoncini for a little more sour and heat and reach salad perfection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the Best Salad Dressing to Use?

I’m an Italian or ranch salad dressing girl for the most part, but these other salad dressings will be great on this Olive Garden copycat salad as well:

A rich and creamy, tangy, fat free Dijon
Tangy, slightly sweet Vidalia Onion Dressing
Skip the pepperoncinis and add slices of mandarin orange or pear on this salad then use an Orange Poppyseed Dressing on top.
You really can’t go wrong with a Balsamic Vinaigrette over almost any salad.
This Greek Yogurt Ranch is creamy, (but not too creamy) tangy, and delicious when poured over any and all veggies, sandwiches, potatoes…basically all the things.

Expert Tips

  • My preferred lettuce to use in this Olive Garden salad is romaine hearts but any green leave lettuce will do.
  • This dressing keeps well in a jar in the fridge for a few weeks, so feel free to double it and use it as your go-to salad dressing to pour over all the salads!
  • Make this salad even easier to make by purchasing pre-cut and washed lettuce as well as grated carrots.
  • If you don’t have grated parmesan, no worries, you can substitute the shaker kind of parmesan if you have it — it won’t be quite as fresh or nutty tasting and the freshly grated but still delicious!
  • Do not dress this salad before you’re ready to eat it or it will get soggy if it sits too long. If you think you’ll want leftovers, only dress the salad you’ll eat now and store the rest of the salad and the dressing separately until you’re ready for the next round.
  • The salad will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days, if left undressed.

I made this salad recipe to go along with a rotisserie chicken for lunch with a couple of girlfriends. We all enjoyed the salad and will definitely be making it again! Thank you!

That’s great to hear! 🙂 Thank you for your review!

  3. Tiffany says:

reggiano parmigiano and herbs de Provence are easy to come by but zesty Italian dressing mix is a non-starter where I live. Any idea what is in the mix?

    1. Tiffany says:

Salt, sugar, dried garlic, dried onions, dried red Bell Peppers, among other spices. I’m sure you can find some easy recipes on how to make your own online 🙂

This was definitely delicious and a unique dressing that I really enjoyed. My only modifications were, no olives nor pepperconcini since I didn’t have them. This is a forever keeper. Also, my lettuce choice was greenleaf

  5. Fran says:

The Instructions for the salad dressing indicates 1.7 ounces of the zesty Italian dressing mix. I have the mix in the packet but it is only .6 ounces in volume as listed on the package outside. When I weigh the package and the salad dressing mix that’s inside together, it comes to exactly 1.7 ounces. So I am confused as to the amount of the zesty Italian dressing mix to put in the recipe.

      Wondering the same thing!

      1. Tiffany says:

This recipe calls for a 1.7 oz packet but if you do not have one, for example, if you have packers that are .6, you can use 3. Hope that clears things up!

  6. Sarah says:

    How much mustard? Other spices?

  7. Cheryl says:

Going to buy ingredients for this and make tonight! I see Herbs de Provence and Dijon in picture but not in ingredient list-did I miss them? Just want to be sure I get everything I need. Looks delicious!

  8. Cam says:

I am SUPER confused…..the picture that shows dressing ingredients like Dijon and Herbes de Provence….in the muffin tin……why are these not in the recipe?

  9. Daniella says:

I can’t wait to try this. Question though, why is the picture of the salad dressing ingredients different than what is in the recipe? Thank you.

    1. Tiffany says:

So sorry about that error- the recipe is updated now.

  10. Kimberly A. Herter says:

Do you add the djion mustard, garlic powder and herbs de provence too! It is in the picture of your salad
ingredients, but not in the recipe itself. Do you leave them out or add them in, how much?

    1. Tiffany says:

So sorry about that typo- the recipe is updated now!
